SPRINGFIELD – Cass Gym at LLCC is buzzing with excitement. Students, parents, and faulty helping with the homecoming game hosted by LLCC Feb. 25. The LLCC girls and boys basketball team played against Parkland College.
There is a table filled with candy, little foam fingers, a Go Loggers poster with a drawing of Abraham Lincoln and markers that the kids can color it with.
On another table is the pictures and the homecoming court, where you have the last chance to vote before they announce homecoming king and queen.
When you walk into the gym you are giving a little card where you get a free hot dog, chips, and a soda. You also get a raffle ticket to be one of the three winners to be a part of a basketball contest to win an iPad Mini.
There is a good turnout of the crowd, mostly all the seats were filled.
I take my seat in the stands and await for the event to begin.
The girls’ game is first. The 2nd quarter score was LLCC 25 and Parkland College 31. Emmi Fisher #33 sinks a free throw for LLCC.
Halftime is when they announce the homecoming nominees for King and Queen once again.
The 3rd quarter score is LLCC 40 and Parkland College 49. Going into 4th quarter it’s LLCC 47 and Parkland College 60. There is a timeout called with 3:36 left on the clock.
The final score for the girl’s is LLCC 51 and Parkland 68.
I asked LLCC Guard Emmi Fisher about the overall performance of the game against Parkland.
“We need to be more aggressive, we played hard and started strong but we started decreasing.” What is a strategy you’ll use for a next game? “Next time play hard all four quarters.”
The boys for both teams started with their warm-ups while there was an intermission before the game started.
Parkland was up 8 points at the beginning of the first quarter. With 12:39 on the clock Joe Larry #14 made a 3 pointer for Parkland, bringing the score to LLCC 9 and Parkland 18.
Edward Longmeyer Guard #22 scored for LLCC making the score LLCC 13 to Parkland 24. While another two points were added for LLCC by Harold Robertson Guard #15. Shaquille Edwards Forward #33 for LLCC brought the score to 22 with his free throws while Parkland had 30. The final score for 1st quarter was LLCC 29 and Parkland 38.
After the 1st half they announced the homecoming King and Queen of 2016 which were Zeke Rowe of Jacksonville and Emmi Fisher of Springfield.
2nd quarter Parkland had 42 to LLCC’s 29. At the time of 15:14 LLCC still had 29 to Parkland’s 50.
The score at 9:06 is LLCC 36 to Parkland 61. The final score for the boys was LLCC 53 and Parkland 71.
The games were a lot of fun and I enjoyed every second of this year’s homecoming event.
