Letter to the Editor: Biden disappoints by not taking action on college costs

Rico Johnson

The Biden administration has been in office since Jan. 20, 2021, and 50 Executive Orders later, there was no executive order for paid college tuition. This is an important issue to all of us in college, as well as our parents.  As a Presidential Candidate, Biden repeatedly said that he would push for free college tuition legislation. I have felt neglected with no mention of this. I voted for him because of this very issue – as did many of my peers. We witnessed the COVID relief package pass Congress and get signed by President Biden with $12 billion awarded to foreign countries.  I felt disappointed that college tuition was not addressed by executive order.

There is currently talk by the Biden administration of a new spending plan to invest in infrastructure, education, and workforce development, as well as fighting climate change. This legislation includes discussions of free community, college rather than free college tuition.  That is a big difference, especially for my age group who have almost completed community college. While I am grateful to learn of these new discussions, Executive Orders can be effective immediately while legislation for a new spending plan may take several months to work its way through Congress.
