SPRINGFIELD — One play and about six seconds.
That’s all Ryan Below needed to score about half of his season total in points. It came on a two-handed slam dunk off a Greenville turnover.
Lincoln Land Community College defeated Greenville College’s junior varsity team, 75-47, on Jan. 19 in Cass Gym.
“They (the Loggers) drew up plays to counter our 2-3 zone,” said Alex Mumphard, the head coach of the Panthers.
The Loggers shot 45.7 percent in the game. They also shot 38.0 percent from the three-point line.
LLCC had five players score double-figures: Derek Smith (10), Justin Thomas (12), Payton Dugan (11), Riley Spencer (10) and Marshall Corbin (12).
Greenville was led by Clayton Settle and Jacob Tobon. Settle had 15 points and Tobon had 13. The Panthers went 29.8 percent from the court.
LLCC coach Chad Jones said he was disappointed in his team’s performance, despite the team’s 13th victory of the season.
“We were quite giving in easy baskets,” he said.
Below, though, has a reason to be happy.
The 6-foot-3-inch freshman forward also nearly doubled his season total in rebounds (6), after having five in the game. He played a season high 11 minutes. His previous high was five.
Lincoln Land ended the first half with a 9-point lead. The Loggers started the game on an 11-0 run, which was soon cut 2 points with about 6:40 left in the half.
LLCC started the second half with a 20-6 run, putting the Panthers behind by 20.
This is the sixth time Lincoln Land has allowed fewer than 50 points in a game. It is 4-2 in those games.
