Last night around 8:20 p.m. – 8:24 p.m. if you took a look up into the sky you would have seen them.
The International Space Station where Astronaut Scott Kelly just returned from after a year in space, would have been able to be spotted by the human eye. Kelly who has a twin, Mark is also an Astronaut and has also spent some time at the station.
But, you only had just a few minutes to catch a glimpse of the station as it few by. Four minutes to be exact.
The station moved quickly across the sky as onlookers watched. But, it’s no wonder that you may have missed it! It only goes 17,150 miles per hour (that’s about 5 miles per second!). Crazy to think that it would even be visible to us.
But, that wasn’t the only thing in the sky last night.
Looking just to the left of the bright moon you would have seen another bright spot. That would have been the planet Jupiter.
Jupiter, which is the largest planet in the solar system is 483.8 million miles from the sun. So that means it’s radius is 43,441 miles.
To give you an example of size the radius of Earth is only 3.959 miles. So that makes Jupiter huge.
There are 4 other planets that are bright enough to see by the human eye which are: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn.
Just to think that there are other planets out there floating around along with other Astronauts in the International Space Station is cool in it self. And if The Virgin Group and CEO Richard Branson we will all have a chance to visit some of those planets.
So take some time and pull out your telescope and check out the night skys. You may just see something other than a shooting star.
