SPRINGFIELD—Lincoln Land Community College’s Veterans Club invites runners and walkers to participate in the eight annual Brian McMillen Memorial Run/Walk on Saturday, May 23.
It will begin at 8 a.m. on the LLCC-Springfield campus, 5250 Shepherd Road. The event offers a 5K run/1-mile walk and a 10K run.
Participants may register online for the Run/Walk at http://getmeregistered.com/BMcMVeterans5kthrough Friday, May 22. Registrations also will be accepted the day of the event.
T-shirts are guaranteed to participants who are registered by Tuesday, May 12.
It costs $20 for the 5K run/1-mile walk prior to race day and $25 on race day. The 10K run is $30 prior to and $35 on race day.
Awards are being presented in several categories.
The Run/Walk raises funds in support of the LLCC Brian McMillen Veterans Scholarship and other charities.
Run/Walk participants can also support their local high school athletic programs through the Brian’s Challenge Grant.
The $500 grant is presented to the high school athletics department that has the highest number of runners/walkers participating in the Run/Walk.
Participants do not need to be high school athletes.
Brian McMillen, an LLCC alum and Illinois State Trooper, served as a Technical Sergeant in the Air National Guard and spent two years of active duty with the Air Force in Saudi Arabia and Romania.
He worked in the LLCC Veterans Office while an LLCC student. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois-Springfield.
He was pursuing a master’s degree when he lost his life at age 24 in the line of duty with the Illinois State Police.
The LLCC Veterans Club was established to engage students and community members in service activities supporting veterans.
Services include:
- supporting troops overseas
- performing local volunteer work
- raising money to fund scholarships
- assisting veterans in need.
The Veterans Club established the Brian McMillen Scholarship to provide financial support to veterans attending LLCC.
