The students of University of Spa & Cosmetology (USCA) were on hand today to show their learning skills to the students here at LLCC. The USCA students have been in a program that has both cosmetology and barber school skills.
All students have one year of training before they can graduate and get their own license. Most students here today have been in the program long enough the they only have a couple months left before they are official barbers.
Chianti, a USCA student commented saying, “I really enjoy it and I like making the people feel good about themselves and of course look good too”
Mario Brown, a Lincoln Land student had a smile on his face as Freddy Van cut and styled his hair. When asked why he wanted to get his hair cut today he commented saying,”I trust him because he’s my cousin”
Freddy commented himself saying, ” I really enjoy cutting hair because I like to visit with people and get to know a little bit about them and soon I’ll have my own Barber shop so I can do just
that”
Will Tracy Bio Chemistry student here at Lincoln Land was smiling as I asked him why he decided to come today and get a free hair cut? I love getting my hair cut and I believe in him as a barber.
I asked Dre who was cutting Tracy’s hair, why did you get into this field, what drew you to it? He replied, “Well, growing up my mom didn’t get me very good haircuts. So I told myself that this is a way to someday have my own place and be able to give others what I didn’t get many of…good haircuts, in fact I was able to cut governor Rauner’s just this last week”
There was even a student here who had just recently had her hair cut. Jacinda Linger who had just gotten a cut three weeks ago explained that she thinks that everyone should always do a good job grooming themselves and keep yourselves clean. Linger is studying to be a radiologist tech for V. A. hospitals.
There were even a few friends watching as friends were getting their hair cut. Talon Tapscott was waiting as barber Shine who’s been in the program 7 months cut his buddy’s Taylor Moore’s hair. I asked Tapscott what he thought about his friend getting his hair cut by these students? Tapscott replied, “It’s free and Taylor really needed it cut, and I think Shine is doing a real good job”
When I spoke with the Instructor Wayne Dunwoody he let me know that he had one student in February, two in April, and one student in May that would be graduating from the Barber program. He believes that all the students catch on pretty quick and are all doing a great job.
Dunwoody said, he was once a student and also graduated through the program and thinks it’s a good start to someone’s future. And when I asked him what he liked better…doing hair or teaching someone to cut hair, he replied, “teaching, I love it”.
Today’s free haircut day was a huge success. So when in a few months they make a return be prepared to get in line for your free hair cut.
