SPRINGFIELD – On Monday, Feb. 1, 2016, the state of Iowa began the voting process for the next President of the United States.
Since 1972, voters have gathered in homes, churches and schools to debate and persuade another to their side. This year, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, a Republican candidate, won the caucus with a record number of votes.
Cruz beat billionaire Donald Trump by about 6,000 votes. Marco Rubio performed above what was expected, garnering 23 percent of the votes.
Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State and Democrat, barely won the caucus against Bernie Sanders.
On the night of the caucus, the two were at a “virtual tie,” according to CNN, because their percentages were both rounded at 50 percent. Because of this, an official Democratic winner was not announced until the next day.
The official numbers show that Clinton beat Sanders by four votes.
The candidates will compete in New Hampshire for the primary on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2016.
